Hype Intensifies!

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Receives August 2020 Japanese Release Date 1

If there were any game from the Nintendo Gamecube era I would choose to see remastered, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles would be one of my only choices. A treasure from my childhood, this side-game in Square Enix’s long-lived RPG series is incredibly charming; offering a lot of challenge, a clever (albeit costly) approach to multiplayer using Gameboy Advance units and much more. While I had long given up hope for this to happen, in September 2018 my wish came true…

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is currently in development for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android platforms. While initially planned for a 2019 release, over the months and years it was pushed back to January 2020 and then a vague mid-2020 launch window. Although the North American, European and Australian release dates remain unknown, a recent Japanese promotional trailer (below) confirms a 27 August 2020 release for Japan.

The video doesn’t really show much else that we haven’t already seen before, such as crossplay between all four platforms and alternate character skins. While an English localised release date has yet to be locked in, I would argue an August 2020 launch window for us is also highly probable. The international version will feature English and Japanese voice acting (a first for the game) in addition to English, French, German, Italian and Spanish subtitles.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles sees you lead a caravan of young adventurers, as each year they leave the comfort of their hometown and travel the world in search of “myrrh”, a mythical substance that can only be found in dangerous dungeons that litter the land. Myrrh is the only thing able to power crystals which keep them and their own safe from the miasma which plagues their world.
