Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Australia – The Magic to End in July 2023

After four years, more than 1,300 performances across original and magic reimagined versions, and more than a million tickets sold – the magic offered by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will end in Australia on 9 July 2023. Producer Michael Cassel Group made confirmed this earlier today, alongside the announcement that a final wave of ticket sales will go live from today – the final chance for audiences in Australia to follow this canonical 8th instalment in the highly acclaimed Harry Potter franchise.

First launching in February 2019 as the two-part, 4-act epic, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child experienced sales which on launch day saw not thousands but tens of thousands waiting in virtual queues to enjoy the first months of performances. The production weathered the impacts posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and after many, many postponements during the peak of the pandemic, was the first production globally to open back up. More controversially, in May 2022, its Broadway ‘Magic Reimagined’ version was brought to audiences, cutting the runtime in half but making it much more financially accessible to audiences. And now, in July, we bid farewell to the magic indefinitely.

According to this statement by the producers, this will be it for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in Australia at this time – with no plans on touring it to other states:

The production welcomed people from every state in Australia as well as visitors from New Zealand, the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, Mexico and many others to the historic Princess Theatre in Melbourne, following a $6 million renovation. It will not tour to other cities, meaning when the curtain falls for the final time on 9 July it will leave Australia.

Productions of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are currently playing at the Palace Theatre, London, UK; Lyric Theatre, New York, USA; Mehr! Theater, Hamburg, Germany; CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre, Toronto, Canada; and at the TBS Akasaka ACT Theatre, Tokyo, Japan. Furthermore, as claimed by the producers:

In 2022, the show broke the record for most tickets sold of any stage play in Australia, selling over one million tickets, and in December 2022 the cast celebrated over 1,000 performances. An estimated 326,500 people saw the show in its first year, topping any previous record set by a stage play in the history of Australian theatre, with over half of these attendees made up of first-time theatregoers.
