Chess the Musical’s Australian Cast Announced Ahead of Tour

-

With 2020 being almost devoid of musical theatre offerings, it is nice to see brand new productions managing to forge ahead with their plans in 2021. One such major musical is Chess the Musical, being performed in Melbourne (Regent Theatre), Adelaide (Her Majesty’s Theatre), Perth (Perth Concert Hall) and Brisbane (QPAC’s Concert Hall) for very short seasons between April 2021 and June 2021. Set to weave a narrative of intrigue, power, beauty and chess over three hours – it remained up in the air whom would be portraying each character on-stage.

With opening night drawing closer and closer, producers StoreyBoard Entertainment has confirmed who will be portraying several lead cast members. Some of the big names involved include: Songstress Natalie Bassingthwaighte; Aria chart-topping vocalist Paulini; New York Metropolitan Opera singer Alexander Lewis; Semi-finalist The Voice 2020 Mark Furze; Australian Idol and Musical Theatre star Rob Mills; Opera singer Eddie Muliaumaseali’i and musical theatre performer Brittanie Shipway

Chess the Musical tells the story of a complicated love triangle combined with dramatic political intrigue in the early 1980s during the Cold War. It is during this time where Soviet and American forces attempt to manipulate an international chess championship for political gains. The show first premiered on London’s West End in 1987, although this production will be a little bit different. Rather than a straight musical, this production will be presented in a semi-staged concert style, featuring a 25-piece orchestra.

Behind the scenes, Chess the Musical is being produced by Adrian Storey from StoreyBoard Entertainment (Barnum, Follies, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and directed by Tyran Parke (Barnum, Follies, Sunday in the Park with George). Musical Direction comes from David Piper (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, The Boyfriend, The Boy From Oz), with Set & Costume Designs by Dann Barber (Barnum, 33 Variations), Choreography by Freya List, Lighting Design by Gavan Swift, and Sound Design by Michael Waters.

Tickets can be purchased starting at $89.00 AUD via any of the listed venues above. You can also find direct links via the show’s official website. Depending on whether COVID-19 flares up in any communities the show is taking place in, it may be delayed or otherwise cancelled.
