Earlier this year it was confirmed that the theatrical comedy ‘Bad Jews’ would be holding an encore season at Alex Theatre in St Kilda starting late-April 2016. This was to be followed by the show finally leaving Melbourne, and going on a national tour. In a recent announcement by Aleksandar Vass and the Vass Theatre Group, it has been confirmed that the show will have its Brisbane première at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in July. To be more specific, performances will be held from July 12th to 31st in QPAC’s more intimate Cremorne Theatre.

Written by New York playwright Joshua Harmon, Bad Jews is a story about family relationships, cultural identity, as well as grief, loss and legacy. It is set to be an edgy black comedy which they have described as “a devastatingly funny battle of Old Testament proportions”.

Their beloved grandfather has died and a treasured family heirloom with religious significance is up for grabs in the Feygenbaum family. But who is most deserving of it? Bossy, overbearing, fanatically religious Daphna, who swears she is the most devout Jew in her family? Her wealthy, less observant cousin Liam, who’s just returned from skiing with his non-Jewish girlfriend, Melody? Or Jonah, Liam’s brother, who would prefer not to get involved in the fight?

This Australian production stars Maria Angelico as the domineering Daphna. She is joined by Simon Corfield as Liam, Anna Burgess as Melody and Matt Whitty as Jonah. Behind the scenes, this production is being directed by Gary Abrahams, with Jacob Battista as designer, Rob Sowinski as lighting designer, sound by Dave Ellis, costumes by Kelsey Henderson and executive producer.

At least one show of ‘Bad Jews’ will be held at QPAC daily from Tuesday-Sunday during its Brisbane season. Tickets are priced between $68-79, with prices depending on seating preference and concession status. To book, visit the QPAC website or contact their box office.
