Ubisoft Outline Future of The Division Franchise

Depicting a world where a pandemic-like outbreak during Black Friday sales caused chaos in the world, Tom Clancy’s The Division was a new universe first introduced to us by Ubisoft in 2016, followed by a sequel in 2019. This was the first original IP released under the Tom Clancy’s banner since 2009, and in a way, has spawned a franchise of its own.

But with the two mainline games purportedly having their main development cycles finished… what is next for the franchise?

Ubisoft have outlined a four-point plan for the series in the future:

A Free-to-Play Game: Titled Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, this is expected to be a free-to-play game developed by Red Storm Entertainment and is pitched to be a standalone experience available on PC, Console and cloud platforms in 2021-22. Plans to expand to mobile platforms, either as part of Heartland or as a separate game entirely, are also in the works.

Updates to The Division 2: Development has not wrapped up on The Division 2 just yet. Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will be receiving new content as part of an update coming in late 2021. Co-developed by Ubisoft Massive and Ubisoft Bucharest, this new content will include an entirely new game mode and new methods for levelling agents, emphasising increasing build variety and viability.

Netflix Original Film: Inspired by the original game’s events, a film of The Division is in the works. The cast will star Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal, directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and co-developed with Netflix.

Novel: Published by Aconyte, a new original novel is in the works, set after The Division 2. It will explore how the Outbreak affects different United States regions as agents fight to secure supply routes.
