There are a few conventions such as Supanova: Pop Culture Expo and Oz Comic-Con which travel across the country each year, although these generally have a broader pop culture vibe. However, events which are more anime-focused are generally offered on a state-by-state level. Sydney for example have the SMASH! Sydney Manga and Anime Show, while Adelaide has AVCON.

The new kid to the block in 2016 was the Madman Anime Festival, which debuted in Melbourne during early-September at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Organised by major Australian anime publisher Madman Entertainment, this saw the company bring over a number of guests (Creative team members, Japanese voice actors and English voice actors), hold a variety of event such as cosplay parades, maid cafes and panels, and in normal convention style – offer a lot of shopping opportunities.

It seems like the 2016 festivities were very successful for the company, as the Madman Anime Festival will be taking a road trip in 2017. Madman Entertainment have announced they will be holding the festival in Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne next year. Each of these events will be held a few months apart, meaning each city will likely receive its own unique guests.

Perth will be first to receive the Madman Anime Festival, with events to be held on March 4th – 5th. This will be followed by Brisbane, which is being held in the cooler months on June 10th – 11th. Finally near the end of the year will be Melbourne, who will have their festival on November 4th – 5th.

Specifics for each state such as venue and special guests will be announced in due course. They have however confirmed that each state will offer “a huge range of spectacular international guests, exclusive exhibits, screenings, cosplay, fan and community events, Japanese food, the Mai-Wish! Maid and Butler Café, the Akiba shopping zone and much, much more“.
