Embark on a Mysterious Journey – Western Plans Confirmed for Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey

-

firis-and-liane_keyart_resultWhile their past work on GUST’s JRPG franchise made this a question of “when” it would be released rather than “if” it would be brought to North American and PAL markets, video game publisher Koei Tecmo have confirmed that Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey will be available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita from Spring 2017 (or Autumn 2017 for those in western markets). Atelier Firis is the eighteenth Atelier game to be developed by Gust, and serves as the second instalment in the franchise’s “Mysterious” arc – which began with Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book earlier this year.

Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey follows the adventures of the titular character Firis Mistlud and her loving older sister Liane Mistlud. The Mistlud sisters have lived their entire lives in the isolated town of Ertona, where Firis uses her unique ability to see where crystals of materials are buried. By way of a fateful encounter, Firis learns of the Alchemy Exam and decides to take her first step into the outside world, setting off on a grand journey to become a certified alchemist and discover the mysteries that life has to offer!

According to Koei Tecmo, Firis’ journey will take her through a vast world full of towns, environments and locations. They have specifically noted that these environments may be up to ten times the size of those offered in Atelier Sophie. Another aspect of the game is how storytelling is presented. Rather than having players following a continuously linear path, players have more choice in how they progress through the game. After passing the Alchemy Exam, players can follow three different paths which focus on different aspects of the Atelier series – Alchemy, Combat and Character Relationships. It is possible to switch between these three paths at any point during the story.

Expect to hear more in the coming months. Until then, check out the announcement trailer above, and some new artwork/screenshots below:
