The Elder Scrolls Online Going B2P With New “Tamriel Unlimited” Edition

-

After launching The Elder Scrolls Online as a pay-to-play (P2P) game last year, Bethesda Softworks have announced that they will be switching their payment model to buy-to-play (B2P). Similar to the system used by Guild Wars 2, this means that players will only have to buy the game rather than paying a monthly subscription fee to access the world of Tamriel. This change will be launched to coincide with the “Tamriel Unlimited” update on the PC/Mac starting March 17th 2015, and will see all active and inactive accounts switched over to the new system. Alternatively, new players will only need to buy the game to access it on the PC and Mac platforms without subscription fees.

Without a regular stream of subscription fees coming in, The Elder Scrolls Online will instead be supported through a collection of optional downloadable content available for purchase an in-game ‘Crown Store’ for “convenience” and customization options. Bethesda Softworks have yet to announce what “convenience” items they will include, but lets hope that they don’t fall into the trap of making the game pay-to-win.

In addition, Bethesda will also begin offering a new subscription service dubbed ‘ESO Plus’. Paid via single monthly charges, this service will grant access to exclusive in-game bonuses, a monthly allotment of crowns to use in the store and access to all DLC game packs while a member. PC/Mac players with active subscriptions on March 17 will be automatically enrolled into ESO Plus and begin enjoying its membership privileges. Currently it is uncertain if this action will be a “thank you” gesture or a means of simply continuing monthly payments until you cancel them.

In addition to announcing the new payment plans, Bethesda Softworks have also confirmed that The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited will finally be receiving its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One console release starting June 9th 2015. As would be expected, the same B2P systems are retained in both console editions, however may require either a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Gold Membership in addition to your purchase.

Our fans are our biggest inspiration, and we’ve listened to their feedback on the entertainment experience they want. We know that Elder Scrolls fans want choice when it comes to how they play and how they pay, and that is what they will get. We have made numerous changes to the game over the past year, and are confident this is a game that Elder Scrolls fans will love to play. Players can explore Tamriel with friends, battle creatures, craft, fish, steal, or siege. The choice is theirs. The game offers hundreds of hours of gameplay with unlimited adventures with one single game purchase. We can’t wait for everyone, whether they’ve played before or will be experiencing it for the first time, to begin adventuring in The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited.
