When Kojima Productions and Konami launched Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots back in 2008 as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, they also bundled an up to 16-play online game titled Metal Gear Online along with it. Featuring a plethora of different game modes, it provided a solid third-person shooter experience while maintaining quite a lot of the charm from the core game. After remaining active for four years, online play was shut down in June 2012, with MGS4 update 2.0 ultimately removing the mode from the game forever.

It has been confirmed that Metal Gear Online will be making a re-appearance in Konami’s upcoming last and current generation release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. To be available at no extra cost, this edition will be newly redesigned with familiar gameplay and aesthetic styling of Phantom Pain’s single-player campaign. With a focus on Tactical Team Operations, the game features a ‘class system’ that more uniquely defines the strengths and abilities of player characters on the battle field. Key characters from the series including Venom Snake and Ocelot will also make appearances.

Further information on the game is set to be announced in the near future.
