Microsoft’s Internet Explorer team have today announced their collaboration with renown Japanese anime studio Production I.G. to launch a brand new free-to-play web browser game titled Gargantia: Sky Courier. Based on the 2013 anime Gargantia on the Verdurous PlanetSky Courier allows players to explore the setting of the Gargantia fleet from the sky. Supervised by Kazuya Murata and featuring a story written by Taishirou Tanimura, this game will provide fans with never-before-seen footage, cut-scene stories featuring Gargantia’s original voice cast and three different endings depending on how you play.

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet follows Ledo, a young soldier from space who wakes up and finds himself marooned on a post-apocalyptic, watery Earth. Growing up in space, and knowing nothing but battle, he is a stranger in a strange place, where humans are forced to live on huge interconnected fleets for survival and travel from ship to ship using surf kites, a cross between a surfboard and an ultralight aircraft. In Sky Courier, you get to play the role of Ledo as he explores his new home from the sky while piloting a surf kite with the help of his friends and an occasional hand from his AI companion, Chamber. While there is the story mode, there is also a mission mode which allows you to get right into the action without the plot and a free flight mode for those who just want to experience Production I.G.’s beautiful game world.

While Sky Courier has been optimized for Internet Explorer 11, and allows both touchscreen and mouse / keyboard controls, it can be accessed on any web browser. The development team have also released the source code for the game’s ‘mission mode’ which will allow anyone with sufficient programming knowledge the ability to develop their own anime game based on Sky Courier. Rather than try to explain how to do that myself, check out the official IE Blog Post for more details.

Nao Hirasawa | Producer at Production I.G.

We wanted as many people as possible to be able to experience Gargantia: Sky Courier, and that is why we were very glad to collaborate with Internet Explorer. IE11’s WebGL technology allowed us to create a beautiful, 3D version of our Gargantia world for the web.
