Pokémon X / Pokémon Y – Game Review
Generation VI of the Pokemon Franchise

I was introduced to RPG’s through the Pokemon video game series and myself like I am sure many others, have pooled more hours into the series than any other on the market. I was excited when first hearing that Pokemon X and Y would take full advantage of the potential capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS gaming console – and while there are still a number of issues they would need to work in on future installments to get top grades, it turned out to be the best installment in the series since the almost flawless Pokemon Gold / Silver / Crystal..
If this is the first step into the future of the Pokemon portable RPG series, I look forward to seeing what they come out with next. Question is… will they ever produce a future installment that would proudly be able to boast the “Gotta Catch em’ All” slogan, given the efforts put into recreating every Pokemon as a 3D model?

While there are still a few issues that need to be ironed out for future releases, the new visual system is a breath of fresh air from the classic sprite-based visual system.
Paid homage to earlier installments of the Pokemon series - including the opportunity to select one of the three original starters to join your party.
EXP Share works for your entire party of six Pokemon, meaning that you are not left with one overly powered Pokemon and five other weaklings.
No rivals, but a group of friends - A nice touch that saw you running into different characters throughout your journey. Could have been better but a solid stepping stone for future innovations when it comes to the classic "rival".
Finally being able to customize your trainer personifications hairstyle and clothing options.
While some may prefer to appear offline when playing through the game in order to avoid random invites, the online battle / trading systems makes strong use of the 3DS consoles capabilities - allowing both to take place irrespective of where you are in the game world.
Solid music backing.
Sylveon - Easily my favourite Pokemon in this game, having plowed (his) way through the Elite 4 and Champion single handedly first time around.
Every Pokemon has seemingly been recreated as a new 3D model for inclusion in this game.
Numerous hints towards a Ruby and Sapphire remake, hopefully based on the new visual system.
A lack of new Pokemon joining the party, less than any previous installment other than Black 2 and White 2.
Mega Evolution felt to be a cheap gimmick that may encourage people to favor certain Pokemon rather than trying out different combinations of unique Pokemon.
Many of the new features included throughout the game were underused and at times tedious to use to the best effect (Eg. Evolving Eevee into Sylveon through the Pokemon Amie system).
The storyline starts off well and it can take you a considerable amount of time to get through the first few gyms. Afterwards, and particularly after earning the ability to perform Mega Evolutions, the game seems to lose that drive and just comes down to going from route to route and from gym to gym with a few bland events thrown in.
The three Legendary Birds make a reappearance in this game, however only one is available per save file depending on your starter Pokemon - meaning it is much more difficult to obtain all three.
While it was good to see them finally offer some trainer customization in game, the options were lacking and at times costly. I think future installments will require a greater variety.
