Rumor: Kotaku Hints That Final Fantasy Versus XIII May Have Been Cancelled

-

Personally I would not be getting too worried about this yet until a formal announcement has been made, however after around six years of being formally announced by Square Enix (and subsequently teased and delayed several times since), Kotaku’s sources have hinted that the game may be no more – potentially leading to a huge blow towards the Fabula Nova Crystallis collection of Final Fantasy games by eliminating easily the most anticipated title in the set.

One source told Kotaku that Final Fantasy XIII was officially cancelled a few weeks ago, leading to heavy disappointment by Square Enix staff. The source also mentioned that they have decided to let the game die quietly without too much in terms of an official cancellation as it may impact stock prices for the company. Another source mentioned that development and resources had gone into working on the next major Final Fantasy title “Final Fantasy XV” – potentially indicating that the game itself would be better marketed as a completely separate game than as a part of a series with relatively mixed reception.

Either way, this is disappointing news as it was the title I was most interested in (And 6 years is a damn long time to wait for a cancellation), but it can only be considered a rumor until formally announced… and considering that it has already been revealed by Kotaku it may be the case that we will hear a formal announcement on this sooner rather than later.

You can dive into Kotaku’s article which contains further details and a history of the project HERE.
