Naughty Bear - Review 1

If you go down to the woods today
Your in for a BIG SURPRISE!
There is a knife wielding teddy bear
With murder in its eyes~

This is a game I picked up out of randomness as I did feel like it would be good to let out all frustration on a couple of cute teddy bears instead of my mouse and keyboard that got a good beating during the semester. The game is not serious at all and attempts to make a game out of a change to a generic cute and cuddly environment. Is it worth playing? Read on to see my opinions!

Meet Naughty Bear, a sociopathic teddy bear out for revenge and stuffed with evil intentions. Striking terror in the hearts of all bears, Naughty Bear lets you scare the stuffing out of your victims before you impale them on your machete. Filled with tons of mischief and over-the-top cartoon violence.

The storyline is covered in 8 chapters which consist of a different scenario, often involving the other teddy bears being mean to him (Such as not inviting him to the big party) or otherwise the teddy bears plotting to kill him through elections and ninjas. The storyline is very weak however and is explained very briefly by a narrator at the start of each episode who first is nice to everyone then about mid-way through, starts encouraging Naughty Bear to go and massacre the others. The narrator is most probably the only decent component of the storyline, as he does seem like a childrens show narrator and it is something I am sure most of us would like to see on an actual childrens show at some time to remove the over-the-top cuteness.

The graphics in this game are average at best, the teddy bear designs are basically the same just with different colours to aid in identifying them apart. The design for Naughty Bear is also similar however he does have the evil appearance to him with the half missing ear. Level designs are okay, however the game seems to overuse the same level too often, which really makes you want to scream for another level design.

First trailer showing an example of storyline, music, sound effects and narrator

The music in this game is appropriate for the theme, there is a lot of childrens songs you would expect from the game, with a dark remix to them. The only voice actor is the narrator which I think he does a damn good job of doing, shows that he was enthusiastic about the job.

Naughty Bear - Review 2

The gameplay is basically, try and kill as many teddy bears as possible with the many items harmlessly lying around town, such as sticks, traps, axes and guns, all of which you are able to massacre them with in unique ways, to attempt to build up your “NAUGHTY POINTS” which unlock new levels and trophies. To try and differentiate the levels, they make you occasionally do tasks such as “Do not get hit” or “Do not attack others” in an attempt to lower point yields and make the game a bit more challenging. Personally, this was fun however after a while, I found it increasingly time consuming to kill in any interesting way and therefore just went about with an axe and knocking them down for points. They will occasionally give you a task to also add difficulty such as stopping a bear calling for help or drive away, but they still only require one hit with the weapon to stop.

Naughty Bear - Review 3Todays the day the teddy bear IS the picnic~

Replayability I would say depends on how stressed out you were and how creative you are with your teddy strangling techniques. Personally, I couldnt be bothered after a few levels and just dropped the game, since I was not really getting much enjoyment out of it, which is rare for me.

Personally, I had high hopes for this game, however after a few hours it just turned to a repetitive mess. I was expecting something similar to this, however I would have hoped that all criteria would have been just a bit better to ensure that you aren’t just doing the same thing every chapter.

Overall

Storyline/Characters – 2
+ Implements a storyline that would go well in a childrens series, if no murder was involved.
+ Narrator at least is in to it.
– Plot relatively non-existant.
– Characters are usually there just to be killed by Naughty Bear.

Graphics – 3
+ Naughty Bear looks naughty
+ Naughty Bear can be customized with unlocked costumes.
– The other bears look generic with no differentiation besides the colour.
– Levels are boring and repetitive.

Music – 6
+ Narrator has a decent voice.
+ Sound effects are overall good.
+/- Music is varied but not utilized well.
– No voice acting.

Gameplay – 3
+ Multiplayer mode.
+ Good reliever of stress
+ They at least attempt to differentiate the gameplay.
– Very repetitive
– Basic hack and slash.
– Doesn’t really give many alternative massacre options that I saw.

Replayability – 2
+ I suppose it would be enjoyable for a casual play through now and again.
– I couldn’t motivate myself to really do more then a few levels, which is rare even for me.

Personal Opinion – 2

Overall Score – 2.5
