Even though it may not be a film festival in one of Australia’s capital cities, the annual Gold Coast Film Festival have always managed to draw a strong array of films and very notable special guests. Several years ago, it was decided to host a Gold Coast run of Supanova: Pop Culture Expo, and this has often meant that several guests from the show have attended either or both the red carpet opening night or attended the festival in some other capacity.

One of these guests is renown actor, internet icon and activist George Takei. Not only will he be attending Supanova Gold Coast from April 17 to April 19, but will also taking time out of his no doubt hectic schedule to attend a special screening of the documentary To Be Takei. Directed by Jennifer M. Kroot, this 94 minute film provides a glimpse at Takei’s colourful, creative and downright impressive life. As always, I will reserve my actual judgement until watching the film for myself, but it is definately something I wouldn’t consider missing.

George Takei will also be hosting a Q&A at the conclusion of the screening, opening the floor to those who wish to ask him for insight. Although no time limit has been scheduled for the Q&A, usually those held at GCFF run for approximately 30 minutes (In my experience).

Only one session of To Be Takei will be run: The Arts Centre Gold Coast on April 18th 2015 at 4:00PM. As with other standard events at the GCFF, adult tickets run for $15.00 while concession card holders, students and pensioners receive a $2 discount ($13.00).

A review of Song of the Sea will be available on The Otaku’s Study shortly after screening.

Founder of The Otaku's Study. I have been exploring this labyrinth of fandom these last fifteen years, and still nowhere close to the exit yet. Probably searching for a long time to come.
