The Gold Coast Film Festival 2015 team have today unveiled the list of films that they will be screening at The Arts Centre Gold Coast and various other locations around the city during this year’s festivities – which are set to take place from April 9th to 19th.

Unfortunately they have had to cut the Cool Japan section from the festival this year due to not being able to source films from a local anime publisher or Japan itself (So unfortunately they have not decided to make Anime Mirai an annual thing for the event). That being said, there is a range of films on offer which should appeal to fans of everything from Horror to Documentaries.

Following previous opening night films including The Grand Budapest Hotel and The History of Future Folk, GCFF ’15 will have Clouds of Sils Maria kick start the event. Serving as a Cannes Film Festival favourite, this film stars Kristin Stewart and Juliette Binoche – with a special introduction by beloved Australian movie critic Margaret Pomeranz. The closing night film on the other hand will be Ex Machina – a Sci-fi film starring Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander; which follows the tale of a young programmer selected to participate in a breakthrough experiment in artificial intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a breathtaking female AI.

Song of the Sea

In place of their Cool Japan segment which has previously been a personal highlight of mine, GCFF ’15 has kicked off a new “Animation Sensation” line of films. This set of films include Bill Plympton’s Cheatin’ and the European animated film Song of the Sea – both of which will have their Australian premiere during the event. Another highlight for pop culture fans will be the Premiere Event of To Be Takei, with George Takei to be in attendance for a special Q&A.

I will be doing focus posts in the coming weeks on films I am particularly looking forward to, but for a full list of films on offer, check out the official Gold Coast Film Festival 2015 website.

Kylie Pascoe | Gold Coast Film Festival Director

This year the Festival program offers a diverse selection of films that will illuminate and entertain and one which we are proud to bring to Gold Coast audiences. By broadening our geographic footprint across the Gold Coast from Helensvale to Coolangatta, we have made the Gold Coast Film Festival and the critically acclaimed films being screened more accessible than ever before.

This year’s festival also sees the return of Queensland Showcase; an integral strand of the festival that supports and showcases the directors, producers and writers from our own backyard. We are proud to host the World Premiere of Fear of Darkness – a film directed by Gold Coaster Chris Fitchett.
