While their video game department has just seen the release of dungeon crawling RPG Criminal Girls: Invite Only, Nippon Ichi Software America’s anime division have also provided a brand new release today. The publisher has confirmed that their Premium Edition collection of the slice-of-life anime Genshiken Second Generation is now available.
Having aired in 2013, Genshiken Second Generation is an anime sequel to the original anime series’ which aired between and during 2004-2007. This will be the first time that NIS America have worked with this series, with Media Blasters’ AnimeWorks division handling early seasons and the spin-off anime Kujibiki Unbalance.
Genshiken Second Generation follows an eclectic gathering of otaku college students in the “Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture” club at Shiiou University. United by their unique lifestyles and mutual fandom, the series follows the adventures of the club’s members as they balance their otaku inclinations with the demands of modern society.
As this is a Premium Edition release, Nippon Ichi Software America will be providing those willing to spend the extra few dollars with their usual assortment of goodies. This set includes the entire 13-episode season over 2 Blu-ray discs, a 64-page hardcover artbook featuring an episode guide, character information, colour illustrations, interviews etc and a hardcover artbox to store everything in. As with the last couple of anime releases from NIS America such as Toradora and The Eccentric Family, the artbox and artbook are designed to fit in with your DVD/Blu-ray collection on the shelf rather than the pretty but monstrously sized boxes that fit with very few anime releases from other publishers.
Genshiken Second Generation is currently available for purchase via selected anime retailers in North America. At this time it is only possible to purchase the MSRP $64.99 Premium Edition, with no confirmation of if or when a Standard Edition set will be available.
Genshiken Second Generation Synopsis
Chika Ogiue begins her third year as the new president of “The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture,” AKA Genshiken. Remembering how difficult it was to recruit new members last year, she comes up with a plan for gathering interest in the club. During recruitment, the former Genshiken president Kanako Ono dresses up in cosplay while Ogiue shows off her drawing skills with an impressive impromptu illustration. This attracts two new female members: Rika Yoshitake and Mirei Yajima. Maybe it’s because birds of a feather flock together, but both turn out to be fujoshis, or “rotten girls,” who are obsessed with the Boys’ Love genre. Then, a beauty with gorgeous chestnut hair arrives at the clubroom looking to join. But, his true identity is revealed as a wig-wearing cross-dresser…
After welcoming the new students with unique personalities, the story of “Genshiken Second Generation” begins!
