Supanova Gold Coast 2014 – Madman Entertainment Panel Recap

-

Madman1

I love the idea of an early morning anime panel at Supanova, especially on the Gold Coast where the queues to enter the main venue can easily move out the door into the sun, and it more often than not it quickly becomes stinking hot! Instead, being able to temporarily avoid that queue, walk up the escalator and take refuge in a cool, air-conditioned hall is perfect.

Similar to what I did with Hanabee’s anime panel, given that I had a lack of internet access during the event, other sites would have already posted up what the announcements were. Therefore, for those who haven’t attended a Madman Entertainment panel before and want to know what one entails, read on as I recap the entire hour long presentation.

All of their anime acquisition announcements have been featured in this article, and you can skip to them by CTRL + F’ing “MadmanAnnouncement0#“.

Already Announced / Released Titles

This panel was hosted by Sylvester “Sly” Ip, Product Manager for Madman Entertainment who has been involved in the Australian anime industry for many years now since the earlier days of the company. After sorting out a few technical issues, Sly dived straight into outlining their March 2014 releases which were now available. He took time to specifically show off the Wolf Children trailer, a title I am personally very fond of and even managed to walk away with The Otaku’s Study Australian Anime Release of the Year 2013 (Silver) award.

Madman3

While some may feel that this was more taunting than anything else considering it is now not possible to order it from their online store, Sly highlighted that their Blu-ray Collector’s Edition of Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Rebellion will be shipping out from their warehouse this week. This has been released very close to the Japanese launch, and taking that into consideration I wouldn’t expect to see a standard edition release any time soon.

For more specifics of what was included in this collection, click HERE.

This was followed by a showcase of titles being released between April and June, in addition to a number of the manga franchises soon to be published by the company including Ranma ½, Deadman Wonderland, Voice Over! Seiyu Academy and Nisekoi. Screenshots of all slides are available below:

Finally after all the stalling, Sly finally took the time to announce a number of recent acquisitions for the company which will be bolstered during next weekends Supanova festivities in Melbourne by another set of titles.

A grand total of four were announced during the event, one during the Cosplay Championships on Saturday and another three during the panel. Information on each of the four are available below:

Knights of Sidonia (MadmanAnnouncement01)

Sidonia no Kishi /  シドニアの騎士

Based on the manga written by Nihei Tsutomu, Knights of Sidonia features animation by studio Polygon Pictures (TRANSFORMERS PRIME, STAR WARS: CLONE WARS, TRON: UPRISING) and takes place 1000 years after an alien race known as the Gauna have laid waste to the solar system. Despite the scale of the destruction, a small portion of the human race managed to survive by boarding an enormous spaceship called Sidonia. Ever since, they have worked endlessly to maintain and defend the remaining population.

Tanikaze Nagate is a young boy who has recently been accepted into a school for Guardian pilot trainees, where he also makes his first interactions with people other than his grandfather. During their first assignment, Nagate and his friends encounter a Gauna for the first time in a hundred years. This is where the battle for humanity’s survival starts.

Madman Entertainment have confirmed that they will begin streaming Knights of Sidonia on the 11th April 2014 via the Madman Screening Room. They will be the first in the world to stream the series in the original Japanese language with English subtitles. An English dub is also in the works and will debut through the same channels in July 2014.

Dai Shogun Great Revolution (MadmanAnnouncement03)

Fuuun Ishin Dai☆Shogun / 風雲維新ダイ☆ショーグン

In the late Edo period, Japan had experienced an unprecedented crisis by Kurofune (Black Ships), the ships from foreign countries. But a giant robot called Onigami, which has existed since ancient time, dispelled the Kurofune ships and the exclusion of foreigners was accomplished. The story begins in Japan where Meiji restoration in 1868 didn’t happen. The tagline says, “I can be the greatest man in the world, because I am a virgin!!”

Date A Live II (MadmanAnnouncement04)

デート・ア・ライブⅡ

30 years ago, a disaster known as a spacequake obliterated the center of Eurasia without warning, leaving 150 million corpses in its wake. Ever since that day, mankind has lived in constant fear of the spontaneously recurring spacequakes.

One day, an ordinary high school boy named Shido Itsuka discovers a mysterious girl at ground zero of a recent spacequake. Shido learns, through the help of his sister Kotori, that the girl is one of the Spirits: mystical creatures responsible for the genesis of the spacequakes. As captain of the anti-Spirit airship Ratatoskr, Kotori recruits Shido to help “seal” the sprits, thus ending their threat to mankind.

There’s just one catch: the only way to seal a spirit – is to make her fall in love with you.

Ultimate Janken

To wrap up the panel, Sly had everyone take part in the usual game of “Ultimate Janken”, which for those unaware is pretty much Rock, Paper, Scissors. Prizes included the above Madman Cap (Which I won!), a DVD copy of Sword Art Online Part I and an Adventure Time set of some kind. It was pretty fun (Especially considering I was not knocked out during the first round), and highlights that interactive panels with games and even just multimedia are a lot more fun than someone reading a list of titles.

Similar to the Hanabee panel on the Saturday, Sly took part in a 10-15 minute Q&A with those in the theatre and some interesting questions were fielded from those in attendance. I don’t have the time at the moment to transcribe them, however may do so in the near future.

Overall an interesting panel that has shown that Madman Entertainment remain committed to licensing titles for simulcast!
