North American anime publisher Sentai Filmworks have decided to wrap up the week by announcing yet another anime acquisition. This time around they have licensed Mangaka-san to Ashisutanto-san to (マンガ家さんとアシスタントさんと) which is currently airing in Japan and being published internationally under the localized title The Comic Artist and His Assistants.
Based on the 4koma manga series by Hiroyuki which was produced over ten volumes between 2008 and 2012, this anime adaptation features direction by Takeshi Furuta (Tiger & Bunny, Place to Place), series composition by Aki Itami (Flowers of Evil, Fruits Basket) and character designs by Hitomi Tsuruta (Gintama, Cyberteam in Akihabara). ZEXCS is also serving as its animation studio.
At this point in time you will only be able to watch The Comic Artist and His Assistants through digital distribution channels, with a home video release planned for the future.
The life of an artist can be hard: Long, laborious hours working in a studio with only your thoughts and assistants to keep you company. In the case of overworked mangaka Aito Yuuki his attempts to merge the two are so far unsuccessful. With so many lovely ladies around, Aito’s stream of consciousness tends to quickly get off the rails and take a turn for the perverse. His priorities are askew and subjecting his assistants to his fantasies has taken precedent over work. Despite Aito’s blatant abuse of power, his beautiful, talented assistants are willing to play along if it means that their work will be successful. It’s all for the sake of the manga, right? At least, that’s what they tell themselves until Aito’s gets a little grabby. Thankfully, editor Mihari is there to keep him in line, from threatening to fire him to physical punishment.
