Earlier this year, Australian anime publisher Madman Entertainment announced that they would be turning their previous biennial Reel Anime event into an annual event with the announcement of Reel Anime 2013. With the first two titles confirmed as being 009 RE: Cyborg and Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo – up until now we have only had two more titles to be confirmed for appearance at the event. With another two sets of Supanova: Pop Culture Expo’s  this month we are set to hear the final two titles announced…. one of these just being confirmed as A Letter to Momo.

A Letter to Momo is the 2012 Japanese theatrical release and is the second feature film from acclaimed director Hiroyuki Okiura whom was also also behind JIN-ROH: The Wolf Brigade and combines intricate hand drawn animation with a heart warming and emotional story that will delight children and adults alike. Of course, I treat claims of a heart warming storyline with skepticism… the same claim was made on the trailer of Mamoru Hosoda’s Wolf Children film and I was left quite saddened by its conclusion.

The last time Momo saw her father, they had a fight. Now he’s gone forever and all she has left to remember him is an incomplete letter with the words “Dear Momo” written on it and nothing more. After moving with her mother from bustling Tokyo to the remote Japanese island of Shio, Momo discovers three goblins living in her attic, a trio of mischievous spirit creatures who have been assigned to watch over her and only she can see.

The goblins are perpetually famished and they begin to wreak havoc on the formerly tranquil island, ransacking pantries and ravaging orchards – acts for which Momo often has to take the blame. But these funny monsters also have a serious side, and may hold the key to helping Momo understand what her father had been trying to tell her.

The final title is to be announced at Supanova: Pop Culture Expo Perth between the 28th and 30th June. The Reel Anime 2013 event is set to take place later this year.
