Madman Entertainment - Supanova Sydney 2011 Announcements 1

After a long and tedious wait of anticipation, Madman has finally announced their acquisitions at the Sydney Supanova. This time, they have announced a lot of newer titles that I am unsure if will be getting an English dub or not, but seem to be getting subtitled releases. Whilst the number of correct guesses I had were uh…. zero / eight, the following titles have been announced:

  • Chaos;Head
  • B Gata H Kei
  • Hetalia World Series + Paint it White The Movie
  • Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike (Movie)
  • GOSICK
  • Nichijou: My Ordinary Life
  • Steins;Gate
  • Deadman Wonderland

Curious to as what these titles are? After the jump, I have a full analysis of the titles for your enjoyment! Do note that currently there is no official release dates for their release to the Australian public, I will have them up as soon as I get news of them.

Announcement #1
Chaos;Head

Description
Takumi is an anime-obsessed recluse with a fetish for two-dimensional girls. His dirty little cyber secrets land him in real-life trouble after a chat room encounter with a mystery man known as the General. In the blink of an eye, Takumi goes from caffeine-addicted gamer to schizophrenic murder suspect. Between the police and a gang of girls with giant swords, someone is watching his every move. [Source: Funimation]

Release Date
The Release Date has currently not been announced as of yet.

Thoughts
The first title is based off a Japanese visual novel which was released on the PC, XBox360, iOS and PSP gaming consoles. The storyline sounds right up my alley, with an otaku who has to endure mystery and action. I belive it is fair to say that there will be at least some fanservice in this series, but reading more into it, I am actually quite excited for this Sci-fi thriller series.

Announcement #2
B Gata H Kei

Description
Yamada is a high school student, and a virgin, who aspires to have 100 casual sex partners. Despite this, she soon finds herself targeting and pursuing only one boy. [Source: AnimeNewsNetwork]

Release Date
The Release Date has currently not been announced as of yet.

Thoughts
This is one of the big surprises to me, as even though we have had recent releases of titles such as Strike Witches (and the whole War on Pants thing), I never thought I would see a series surrounding a virgins quest to have 100 casual sex partners. I have no idea really want to think about this, as it could be good, but on the other hand it could just be episodes that are borderline hentai. Either way, it is caught my interest and I am actually looking forward to getting a chance to review it.

Announcement #3
Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike

Description
A long time has passed since the end of a massive war between humans and monsters. A new type of energy named “aer” was discovered. When crystallized, this substance became the energy source for “blastia”, an ancient civilization’s technology that provided a wide array of essential abilities for humanity. Despite it’s manipulation, mankind still has little knowledge of what exactly is “aer”. On a mission to eradicate a horde of monsters near the town of Shizotania, a group of knights comes across a strange surge of “aer”. Yuri Lowell and Flynn Scifo are two new members fresh out of the academy of this knight division. Both are childhood friends who went separate ways, but ended up meeting each other once again while enlisting to serve the Empire. [Source: AnimeNewsNetwork]

Release Date
The Release Date has currently not been announced as of yet.

Thoughts
Whilst I have never actually gotten around to reviewing the game as of yet, Tales of Vesperia would most probably be second in terms of my favourite “Tales of…” game, with the first being Tales of the Abyss for the PS2 (Not what I fear will be some sort of watered down version on the 3DS). Anyway, from the description, I assume that there will be at least for some part, the backstory of Yuri and Flynn, which isn’t investigated in enough detail in the game, so it should be an enjoyable watch for any fan of the game. As for relation to the game environment, I doubt there would be much if anything on the actual game, as judging from the image above, only a couple of the characters from the game are on it, whilst non-game characters are.

Announcement #4
GOSICK

Description
GOSICK takes place in 1924 in a small, made-up European country of Sauville. The story centers on Kazuya Kujo, the third son of a Japanese Imperial soldier, who is a transfer student to St. Marguerite Academy, where urban legends and horror stories are all the rage. There he meets Victorique, a mysterious yet beautiful and brilliant girl who never comes to class and spends her days reading the entire content of the library or solving mysteries that even detectives can’t solve. [Source: AnimeNewsNetwork]

Release Date
The Release Date has currently not been announced as of yet.

Thoughts
GOSICK has been met with a rather interesting reception in Japan, primarily for the reason that Victorique is absolutely adorable. I like the mystery genre, and having a series that is based on mysteries around that time period, I am sure it will at least to some degree, be similar to Sherlock Holmes. I don’t have much to say on this series except I look forward to it!

Announcement #5
Nichijou: My Ordinary Life

Description
While the title suggests a story of simple, everyday school life, the contents are more the opposite. The setting is a strange school where you may see the principal wrestle a deer or a robot’s arm hide a rollcake. However there are still normal stories, like making a card castle or taking a test you didn’t study for.[Source: AnimeNewsNetwork]

Release Date
The Release Date has currently not been announced as of yet.

Thoughts
Nichijou: My Ordinary Life is a series that tries to be a more modern designed version of Azumanga Daioh, which remains one of my favorite school comedies. This series is definately going to be a lot randomer then other series, I mean, why else would you see a principal wrestle a deer if it is not a random series? However, if anything, you can always find comfort in the very enjoyable opening sequence, with a song by Hyadain, who is also responsible for several parody songs on Youtube such as Rap de Chocobo.

Announcement #6
Steins;Gate

Description
Steins;Gate is about a group of friends who have customized their microwave into a device that can send text messages to the past. As they perform different experiments, an organization named SERN who has been doing their own research on time travel tracks them down and now the characters have to find a way to avoid being captured by them. [Source: AnimeNewsNetwork]

Release Date
The Release Date has currently not been announced as of yet.

Thoughts
The title sound familiar? This anime series is based off a Visual Novel released by the same company as Chaos;Head and is also a Sci-fi thriller series, however considering the CERO rating C in comparison to the higher ratings for the Chaos;Head, the storyline will most probably be tamer. I actually like the premise, with microwaves having an ability other then cooking food or blowing stuff up.

Announcement #7
Deadman Wonderland

Description
Ganta Igarashi has been convicted of a crime that he hasn’t committed, and sent to a new, privately owned and operated prison, where the inmates are the main attraction in a modern day twist to the gladiatorial coliseums of ancient times. Throw in a healthy dose of weird little girl, some new-found super powers, and a little conspiracy theory, and you have Deadman Wonderland. [Source: AnimeNewsNetwork]

Release Date
The Release Date has currently not been announced as of yet.

Thoughts
This seems to be the biggest hit out of all the titles announced going by the Madman Facebook wall. To be honest, this seems to be the one that I would be least inclined to watch as prison + gladiatorial coliseum doesn’t really offer much in any department.

Announcement #8
Hetalia World Series + Paint it White The Movie

Description
Italy, once home of the strongest empire in the world, has changed. This is the story of Italy, now a cowardly pasta-loving fool, and his friends (other personified countries of the world) as they live through strange moments in world history. (This is a continuation of the first series.) [Source: AnimeNewsNetwork]

PLUS

The movie involves a mysterious force causing unusual incidents to happen all over the world, and the nations having to try to ward off the threat of human extinction from the alien race known as Pict, who seek to transform mankind and drain the color from the world (with America deciding that the world will be saved under his command). [Source: MyAnimeList] –

Release Date
The Release Date has currently not been announced as of yet.

Thoughts
Whilst every other series I have mentioned prior are newer series, it is very hard to comment on this, as I have not read any of the manga or watched any episodes of the anime series. I will let you make up your own mind on this. Do note that this was announced on Facebook as Hetalia World Series + Paint it BlackThe Movie, as far as I can tell, Paint it White is the correct title of the movie.

Final Thoughts

A very nice collection of newer series for release, however I am currently unsure if it is going to be for online sub distribution only, DVD sub distribution or English dub distribution. Either way, I am pleased…. now if only Baka Test was on the list I would be very happy…. However, as I said with the Siren Visual writeup, there is always the Perth Supanova starting this Friday to look forward to potentially more anime acquisitions.

Also, just incase people are wondering why titles may not have been mentioned, here is a mention in their previous Madman Anime newsletter indicating that there will be further announcements in Perth….

and don’t forget to check previous announcements in other newsletters, as it is possible you skipped over them, as Madman do acquisition announcements often through their newsletters and Facebook Wall. Here is last months:

  1. B Gata H Kei: Wonder if Funi is gonna nab this(Considering that Funi has a lot of these licenses) in the US. It was one of the animes I truly enjoyed last year, so Hopefully we see it announced at either AX or Otakon.

    • Oh, B Gata H Kei isn’t licensed by Funi or another company? I know Siren Visual occasionally does DVD versions of series not released in the US, but this would be one of the few times for Madman….

Judging from your reaction as well as @facebook-561978302:disqus’s, I assume that the series is good then…. I do look forward to getting a chance to check them all out :-), whenever they are released over here….

Currently from what I have been able to gather, these will all be DVD releases, especially as Madman doesn’t usually do the online viewing thing I know Funimation does… but it is good to know that the gap between Japanese and English release dates are closing, and even more, the gap between American and Australian releases.

      • The gap is closing? HA! We’re still waiting for the Geneon Universal Titles(Shana 2/Index/RAILGUN), and some other titles that Funi licensed. Sentai has been doing a lot better on the time of release than Funi has.

B Gata hasn’t, not even by Crunchy. Yet. Madman usually gets most of Funimation’s titles, so I think I’ll see it here.

        • “The gap is closing? HA! We’re still waiting for the Geneon Universal Titles(Shana 2/Index/RAILGUN)”

Haha, I will not deny that however.
