How long were you expecting to have to wait for Usagi Drop to make it to DVD release? 6 months? a year? More? Well, Siren Visual have today opened up their pre-orders for the DVD release expected to be released on the 22nd February 2012 in Australia, only a couple of months after release and only a little more than a month after the final volume of the series is released in Japan. If you so wish to acquire this interesting series, you can do so HERE for the price of $49.95.

At his grandfather’s funeral, 30-year-old bachelor businessman Kawachi Daikichi encounters 6 year old Rin, who is shunned by his immediate family. As he presses his relatives for information, he discovers Rin is the child of his grandfather’s mistress, a secret which brought shame on their conservative family. Daikichi doesn’t like children, but the cold attitude of his relatives towards her causes Daikichi to reconsider his stance and adopt Rin and raise her as if she were his own daughter. After all, she is blood…and endearingly cute! What kind of clothes to buy her? What to feed her?  What to do about nursery school? Daikichi’s new life raising a 6-year-old girl is an uninterrupted stream of bewilderment.

Also now available for pre-order is Casshern Sins: The Complete Series on Blu-ray. Earlier this year, I did reviews of Parts 1 and 2 of the series which can be read HERE and HERE. You can pre-order this collection, also due out on the 22nd February 2012 for $79.95 HERE.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world of ruin and rubble, populated almost exclusively by robots, we are introduced to Casshern; a cyborg who is mostly human in appearance.  Suffering from amnesia, the only thing Casshern knows about himself is that everyone wants to kill him. Having no choice, Casshern is forced to fight. Throughout the episodes Casshern’s origins are revealed. We discover:

  • At some point in history robots developed the ability to think for themselves and realized they – like humans – will eventually die.
  • The fear of death created the perfect environment for a mean, hateful dictator to rule the world with an iron fist.
  • After years of repression, a glimpse of hope was discovered in the form of a pure, innocent child named Luna, whose popularity among the masses grew to be enormous.
  • The dictator saw Luna as a threat and vowed to have her assassinated.
  • The assassin was Casshern, he was successful and the world plunged into despair.

As we follow Casshern through a desolate wasteland on his quest to discover his true identity, we find he is humble and seemingly invincible, and he must confront the fact that he is ultimately responsible for the complete destruction of the world.
