I made it clear about a year or so ago that my favourite Final Fantasy game was not infact one of the numbered series but what could potentially be an underloved release on the Nintendo Gamecube called Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles – and no, I am not talking about the Nintendo DS remakes or the rather average sequel on the Nintendo Wii.
The game was an action RPG that due to the need to constantly flick through screens, required you to attach a Gameboy Advance to the console if you wanted more then one player joining you. Now, this game has not been ported to any other console due to the limitations of having to have the game pause every time one player wanted to access the menus to change Equipment, skills etc. The original Gameboy Advance connectivity was subject to criticism due to costs and practicality but this is where the Wii U comes in.
For those who are either brand new to gaming or have been living under a rock for the last couple of months, the Wii U is Nintendo’s next console expected to be out in 2012 and for now, only the controller has been properly previewed. The controller itself can be described as a Wiimote that swallowed a Gameboy Advance, allowing you to see content both on the television screen and as well having access to other information on your controllers touchscreen. You see what I am getting at?
Even for single-player this would be practical – as instead of worrying about flipping through menus every five seconds, you just have to glance down at your controllers menu. Even more-so for the multiplayer mode where you can replicate the Gameboy Advance functionality with no wires, no added costs and no doubt better displayed then it originally was. So, I pose to both Nintendo and Square Enix that they just consider the possibility of letting this classic title be ported over to the Wii U – with improvements to the controller functionality or even go the full yard and bring the game back to its glory days with a sequel that faithfully follows the old game style instead of trying to take it to new gameplay genres like what has been done. I can tell you, out of the 20-30 Gamecube games in my collection, it is the only one to have clocked up 60ish hours of gameplay and still played by me to this day.
