So, in the end, the Australian Labor Party and Julia Gillard did win the election despite the fact that the Coalition did have more votes from the general public (Elections are a giant headache first time round, numbers dont seem to mean much….). Now, I am not going to blabber on about each and every issue that I see with this government, but instead I would like to focus on the parties opinions of several aspects of gaming.
1.The Internet Filter
Now~ all Aussie gamers should know by now that the party intends to pass a motion that forces the blocking of all X-Rated content, alongside potentially any content that is not appropriate for children to see. Screw it if you are an adult. Not good for me considering my uni degree and I require access to sites that are not usually appropriate for children (Educational wise for research). Not going to bore you with all this as honestly, google it and you will find hordes of information. As well, wouldnt surprise me if anime websites went down just because well, how many bikini wearing characters do you see on a normal anime site viewing marathon? On the other hand, both the coalition and the greens claimed they would shatter the internet filter into a little garbage bin on trash day never to be heard of again. 2. Apple Store
Apple store you might say? Well, I saw a report on GamePolitics which stated that the government wants all application developers to submit their games for review before they are sold on the Apple Store. Now, here is the catch, regardless of the program, it can cost between $470 and $2040 per entry. So, death of the Apple Store? I think so! 3. R18+
Simply put, whilst both the Coalition and the Greens openly support looking into the 18+ system for Australia, something we really need, the Labor party is seemingly wary about it (Big issue earlier this year), and the review into it is seemingly taking forever. I did a report last year on the 18+ rating and did some heavy research on it, and as an individual, I say WHY THE HELL NOT!?!?! Little evidence supports the link between gaming and violence and the witch hunts only seem to be fueled by individuals not in the industry. Source: http://au.gamespot.com/features/6271499/index.html
4. Internet
Google it, too much hoo-hah to accurately comment on it in an unbiased way…..
This shall be the only politically motivated post on this blog in the history of it (At least, hopefully), I simply stand that gaming is my passion, I am not going to have some people several decades older then me try and tell me to play G-Rated Kiddy Games. I do respect everyones decision on who to vote for, so regardless of who you voted for, hope it works out =D
Don’t forget, this is only focused on the one aspect of the election, as this is an otaku blog, I do not intend on focusing on any other aspects, whether they are GOOD or BAD. Google it for the rest of the gist and many other peoples opinions.
Either way, have a nice day.
