Quick Note: I was originally going to do it in one big review but I noticed how late it is getting… so~ I am doing it in installments, most probably this one (Containing 1-10) and another one (Containing 11-21 + rest of review)
Well, I finally got around to playing Disgaea 3 today after the last few days of brutal exams and presentations. Anyway, beforehand, I listened to every song on the 21 song-album, with music by Tenpei Sato. Here is my review:
Song 1: Demon Academy
In Game: 3
Review: This is the opening theme of Disgaea 3, as you can see from the Youtube video posted above. I really enjoy this song, I thought no game opening could beat Disgaea 2′s opening but I guess I was wrong. Seems like quite a lot of animes and games are going to the dancing style of animation. Really good song! Why must both of the game openings be so short T_T
Song 2: Demon Academy Prospective Student
In Game: 3
Review: If memory serves me right, this is the game over theme for the game. My first thought about it was… what the heck is this doing as a game over theme, a little bit too cheery for a game over theme. But anyway, it is a pretty cheerful song, which does sound a bit out of place in a game such as this. Anyway, it is still pretty good, although not as good as others on this disk.
Song 3: Tales of Innocent Youth
In Game: 3
Review: I am pretty sure this is a battle theme or cutscene theme, I just cannot remember where I heard it in the game. Anyway, it isn’t a favourite of mine, but it is still quite good in regards to the games genre and tone. This also makes it one of the few non-vocal tracks on this disk. (Okay, going through it again… there are quite a few non-vocal tracks on this disk…)
Song 4: Lord Laharl’s…Hymn?
In Game: 2/3
Review: They had this in the bonus disk for Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories and I wondered why they bothered to put a song like that in the CD when there were plenty of other good songs. I would have to say that while it is effective in the game, in events such as the item world special rooms and all that, it isn’t really worth putting in a CD.
Song 5: Galaxy Wars
In Game: 1
Review: For all the “Space” style music from Disgaea 1, I have always remained neutral with it. I do not dislike it… however, I do not enjoy it. Another group of songs which I do not feel belong in this soundtrack and instead belong in a game soundtrack, because, to be honest, I cannot remember anything about this song in Disgaea 1, I am pretty sure it had something to do with Gordon and his gang or Kurtis.
Song 6: Planet X
In Game: 1
Review: Same as Above
Song 7: Etna Boogie
In Game: 1/2
Review: This was also on the Disgaea 2 Bonus Disk I have but that doesnt make it any worse at all. For the character of Etna, it is a very effective song which works well with everything about her character. While I must admit, it isn’t usually my form of music, I can make an exception for this song as it is so perfectly done.
Song 8: Poem of the Vagabond
In Game: 3
Review: I don’t believe I have come across this song in-game yet. When I first heard it, I was reminded of the game Ragnarok Online, which I may have mentioned before, I was addicted to around a year and a half ago, before the oRO servers closed down. Anyway, I would like to see how this is implemented in the game!
Song 9: Sinful Rose
In Game: 2
Review: Another song that I really enjoy! Reminds me of the first time I picked up Disgaea, after a 1 year long persuit after Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, finally getting Disgaea 2, and falling in love with it. Anyway… the song works very well with the video clip shown above and is a must to any Disgaea fans music collection, as it is very good… simple as that!
Song 10: My Comrade
In Game: 1/2
Review: While this was originally for Disgaea 1, my memories are not of it at all. My memories of this song remain in Disgaea 2, where if you called Kurtis on the mobile phone, he would arrive to help you… along with this theme song. I have no problem with the song, althrough other members of my family who had to listen to it for half an hour while I was doing a level, might have been wondering why I had the song on loop. Several great battle themes were also ruined by me calling Kurtis and having the song played….
Back to the song anyway, it is a very upbeat song that I would have been almost shocked if it wasn’t on this CD!
The rest of this review will be coming in a separate part to this.
