OP Theme: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni by Shimamiya Eiko - No matter how many times I watch it (Which is quite alot), I still feel that this is a brilliant opening, and it is definately much better than the one in the new series! I don’t know why I like it so much but I think it is the different style of singing as most of the ones I hear are upbeat but this one is a genre of its own. The animation of flowers and stuff was also creative.
Episode 1 – The Secret: This episode begins with the ending of this arc. Keiichi is surrounded by the two bodies of Rena and Mion after bashing them with a baseball bat. After the opening sequence, Keiichi wakes up in his bed and heads outside to meet Rena who is walking to school with him. He tells her that she should have a sleep in instead of waiting for her. Which she responds that she would make him wait. He retaliates saying he would not wait for her making her cry until saying it was a lie.
At school, Keiichi explains about the class structure and that there is only one classroom for all grades with ONE TEACHER! Despite him being younger then the other two, Keiichi helps Mion and Rena which he finds hard at the end of the class. The two girls offer to take him around town as he doesn’t know many places in the area as he only moved in a month ago. He plays around with Mion saying that he only wants Rena to go with him.
The day after, the two take him for a tour around and they all have lunch with each other. Rika and Satoko soon arrive and Keiichi and Satoko have their usual fight while he is very kind to Rika. After the fighting and eating, they all head off for some more adventure. That evening, everyone leaves except for Keiichi and Rena and she decides to take him to her favorite place, which is the Garbage dump.
While Rena goes of scavenging for cute treasure, Keiichi meets Tamitake who attempts to take his photo without asking. When Keiichi says a joke about Rena digging around for a corpse, he finds out that it did happen and the victims body was cut into pieces, and an arm was yet to be found. When he leaves, he questions Rena about it who gives him a stern no. He feels that she is hiding something and he attempts to get to the bottom of it.
In the school, they all induct Keiichi into their Games group and they decide to play Old Maid. Keiichi makes a joke about them being able to tell the cards apart by the old marks on the cards, which once again, is actually true. In the end, he manages to trick Mion into believing he is holding a different card, however it is too late as he had lost. His punishment is face graffiti by pen.
When walking home, Mion discusses the problems with the dam being built yet when Keiichi asks about the murders, she also gives him a stern no, just like Rena gave him. He heads off to see Rena and help her remove a Kenta Doll (Which is the doll outside a chicken stall), from the ruins. He asks her for an axe. While she is gone searching, he finds some old newspaper articles on it. All the while, Rena is walking back to him carrying a cleaver.
Episode 2 – The Secret: Keiichi notices Rena behind him carrying the cleaver and he freaks out about it. He says that it is too late to do any cutting now so they would meet up tomorrow to do it. At their next club meeting, they discuss the Watanagashi festival that is coming up and their club activities that they will be doing. On the night of the festival, they meet up with Rika who is in her priestess gear which drives Rena into her Kawaii~ Overdrive Mode.
They take part in their club activities which include eating alot of (Some Spicy Food), Shaved Ice (I think that is what they call it in Japan) and Cotton Candy which they all end up sick over. They are having their photos taken by Tomitake who didn’t ask again but they all know him. They all watch Rika’s performance and drop their cotton into the river. While the rest of the group leaves, Keiichi meets up with Tomitake and the nurse named Takano. They discuss the curse of Oyashiro-sama which causes a death of a resident each year as well as causing one citizen to go missing.
The day after, they group are in their club games meeting playing a game like Cluedo when Keiichi is called out by Chie-sensei. The person who wants to see him is a detective named Ooishi who tells him that Tomitake was murdered the night before and that Takano went missing. Keiichi promises to keep him informed and after some convincing, promises not to tell any of his friends as they are all suspects.
In class, Keiichi overhears something about Rena saying she will be next to go however Keiichi wakes up. He notices a card saying Satoshi’s name, who is Satoko’s cousin/nii~nii~. She refuses to say anything and when they walk home, Keiichi gets angry with her and claims she is lying. However she acts all possessed and says that he is also hiding secrets and she knows about his meeting with Ooishi.
That night, he receives a call from Ooishi and is told some more information about the murders and what has happened in each of them. He has to hang up when his father has brought tea for two and says Rena just walked up awhile ago. Keiichi realizes that she heard his conversation with Ooishi and now knows everything. The episode ends here.
ED Theme: Why or Why Not? by Oshima Hiroyuki feat. Katakiri Rekka - I actualy really enjoyed this ending theme more than I expected. The calm theme with the animation worked really well. I must admit, I also liked the little piece of music playing during the preview scene which is also very different with all the Japanese Phrases coming from it, most likely from the next episode.
Review: I have decided since I do not know how long Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai will be on hold for so I decided I should at least occasionally review its previous series. I am not sure which is better as they are both very very very good. It is a very different style of anime I must admit and it was good to see how the series all began. (As you remember, the first episode I reviewed I had no idea until I watched this series to begin with.)
I will either do this on an arc to arc basis or in clumps of two or three important episodes, like I have done for this one.
